Diabetes and Alcohol

Alcohol can affect blood sugar level that does rather reduce to prohibit for people with diabetes as it causes unexpectedly serious diabetes complications and delays diabetes treatment also, the diabetes complications are such as hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

In some case, the patient with diabetes is occasional able to intake the limited amount of alcohol according to the doctor’s or diabetes care-takers determination of allowance.

Alcohol and Blood Sugar

For our body, alcohol means toxin that needs to be broken down and detoxified then removes out from bloodstream as quickly as possible.
After we have drunk alcohol, it passes through mount down into stomach and intestines then without any breaking down system quickly be absorbed into blood stream. The alcohol in blood stream will be breaking down by liver’s metabolism which takes time and in fixed rate so if alcohol is passing into blood stream through other parts of body faster than the metabolism of liver, the brain cells will be affected by alcohol of the intoxication and weaken functions. Moreover, the body cells and organs can be destroyed by the accumulated amount of alcohol intoxication.
A study found the absorbing of alcohol from an after-meal stomach into bloodstream enables to slower by fat, protein and carbohydrate of three times rate comparing to the empty stomach.
Alcohol can confuse process of liver’s agenda as it is recognized a toxins so liver has to get rid it out from blood as quickly as possible. Even though in a severe hypoglycemic of people with diabetes, the blood sugar level is too low and needs immediately energy from the stored glucose which the liver should do this function first, but alcohol in blood stream has confused liver and keeps it busy with the detoxification of toxin (alcohol). This is a serious risk that low blood reactions are confused with the drunkenness so it leads to many different problems and delays the emergency treatment.

Guidelines for Drinking Alcohol and Diabetes

If your doctor allows the people with diabetes to drink alcohol, there are guidelines to minimize the risk of interfering blood sugar level by alcohol:
· Only doctor’s determination of alcohol drinking allowance.
Alcohol can make some diabetes problems worse. Alcohol can accumulate in nerve cells, intensifying damage from high glucose levels and worsening neuropathy. It also raises triglycerides, blood pressure, and risk of cataracts. If you have frequent hypoglycemia or a past
history of severe hypoglycemia, alcohol may be too big a risk for people with diabetes.
· Moderation of drinking.
A single alcohol drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 11/2 ounces of distilled liquor. Moderation of alcohol drinking generally means no more than two alcohol drinks per day for men and no more than one per day for women. Alcohol can be stored in our body as fats.
· Do not have an empty or little-food stomach drinking.
Avoid drinking alcohol when you stomach is empty as it will be faster absorbed into the blood stream then result to the rapid drunkness and further to other related diabetes complications.
· Never drink alone and always carry a form of identification, indicates you have diabetes.
In case of people with diabetes can get immediately help when an emergency treatment of hypoglycemia reactions is needed while the diabetes patient has serious alcohol intoxications.
· Careful practices.
Alcohol is not safe for people with diabetes so with the allowance for alcohol drinking, patients with diabetes have to regularly, frequently and strictly check blood sugar levels, eat medicines as prescriptions and go on your diet regimes.

Diabetes and Anxiety

From studies of doctors, people with diabetes often struggle with anxiety disorders as common as depression which are usually undiagnosed. The patients with diabtes who worry too much of their illness concern such as sexual difficulty, needles, hypoglycemia or weight gain certainly feel anxious and stress out so they might neglect to control their blood sugar levels and this will be able to lead them to diabetes complication risks.

Many
symptoms of anxiety overlap with those of depression. The patients with diabetes are affected by these symptoms may include;

· feeling "stressed out"
· restlessness and irritability
· lack of energy
· difficulty concentrating
· muscle tension
· the jitters
· headaches
· poor sleep
· excessive sweating
· palpitations or shortness of breath
· upset stomach

Anxiety Treatment
There are two main categories for anxiety treatment:
- behavioral treatments and medication.

Relaxation therapy.
A little stress is not bad; it can become a creatively stimulated factor for human to accomplish a rushed or time limited activity of work also for some people, more stress is a good motivation. But too much negative stress in a long period of time can not absolutely be good to anyone so we try to learn the many techniques of relaxation and select the suitable methods which effectively
work for us no matter you are a patient with diabetes or not. For instance, yoga, meditation, prayer, hobbies, exercises or even entertainments, these are the methods which are worked for a lot of people in relaxations. The behavior treatments for the patients with diabetes are more suggested even though they need quite a lot effort of practices but in worse cases or addictives, the doctor does need to treat them by medication.

"Biofeedback";
one of a particular technique for patients with diabetes type 2, this method is able to help them to control their blood sugar levels more effectively. This method, the patient with diabetes type 2 is attached to the skin with a sensor that delivers the data information of the skin temperature, muscle tension or circulation which links to a monitor. If the stress increases, the data will be showed the intensifies of body muscle or other body stress-related function then the therapist will ask the patient to relax by thinking a beautiful picture or pleasant thing so this biofeedback receiving is able to help about relaxing, emotional control and also the blood sugar level.

Medication.

In some cases, doctors may prescribe medications called benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam (Xanax), to control anxiety. Benzodiazepines work fast and cause few side effects, other than drowsiness. However, they can be highly addictive, so these pills are typically used for short periods and may be a poor choice for patients with alcohol or drug abuse problems. One alternative to benzodiazepines is the drug buspirone (BuSpar), which belongs to a newer class of drugs called azipirones. Buspirone takes longer to produce benefits and may have side effects such as dizziness, headaches, and nausea, but it is less addictive than alprazolam (Xanax). In addition, some doctors claim success in treating anxiety with antidepressants, especially SSRIs.
